Wellness (n): the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.

What does wellness mean to you? Stop and think about that for a moment. As we age, it becomes increasingly important to maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit. There are three wellness principles I embrace when interacting with clients. Those principles are:

  • Nutrition is a major form of healthy investing

  • Cellular health is determined by the foods we eat

  • Embracing and living with S.O.U.L

As a person in society, we only have the one body to live in and it is increasingly important we take great care of how we treat this body of life. Nutrition is a major form of healthy investing and is the first principal you should embrace and understand. Many of us take our bodies for granted. We do not take time to invest into what will make our bodies healthy and whole in order to prevent disease. I believe many of us have lost our way as it relates to nutrition because of conscious stimulation from advertising of convenience foods, fast foods and processed foods that are stuck in our brains and our thought processes. If we were to analyze how many commercials, we see or hear on a daily basis, the vast majority do not include anything about eating healthy or making healthy food choices. It is very necessary for individuals to pay attention to their nutritional intake and one way to do this is by investing in healthy choices to keep the body in a state of optimal health. Another option is to seek out a holistic nutritionist or food educator to help you make healthier food selections and show you how to cook nutrient dense foods that you and your family can enjoy together.

Cellular health is determined by the foods we eat. This principal is paramount in helping you understand how having the proper nutrition helps prevent cellular dysfunction in the human body. There are approximately 30 trillion individual cells that make up the human body and we need to ensure our body is receiving its share of macronutrients and micronutrients to keep the cells healthy for everyday living. Our cells are the building blocks of life and healthy cells are vital to every process within our bodies. Cellular nutrition plays an important role in many functions of the human body and incorporating this principal will provide you with a deeper understanding of how nutrition plays a role beneath the surface of the skin.

The last principle of embracing and living with S.O.U.L which means eating seasonal, organic, unprocessed, and local. Embodying this principal is instrumental in helping you learn the holistic nutrition lifestyle so that you may feed your body with nutrient dense foods. Eating with the seasons ensures your body is in sync with the natural world and it helps you to eat nutritious foods properly grown for that season. When you provide your body with organic and unprocessed foods, you minimized your exposure to pesticides, chemicals and hormone disrupters that is running rampant in the food supply. By eating locally, you support local farmers and business which allows you the opportunity to see where your food it coming from and see how it is being grown. Also, by eating local, your food is not traveling long distances from foreign countries. Eating closer to home provides you with better quality food full of healthy nutrients.

Many of us lead hectic lives and we need to get back to a simpler way of living so we can nurture and treat our bodies with respect. The advertising and food industries have brainwashed us in regards to how we should feel about food. Here is a resource you can used to help you start eating seasonally: https://www.seasonalfoodguide.org/. Use this resource to help you get adjusted to eating foods seasonally then go venture out to local farmers in your areas to see which crops they may have available for purchase. Make a commitment to yourself by giving up one processed food a day and replace it with a healthier food choice. By incorporating the aforementioned wellness principles and tips, you can jump start your way on the path to living a healthier life while aging gracefully.
